And the winner is… Project Urdar!

April 15, 2025. We are so happy and proud to announce that Project Urdar, one of the precursors to Swedigarch, has been awarded the Cartographic Society’s prize for Achievement of the Year: Årets DIGG. Project Urdar receives this distinction for the most comprehensive effort to date to make digital archaeological field documentation accessible in Sweden. Thanks to the project, GIS data from over 3,000 archaeological assignments have now been secured for the future and made available for advanced analyses. The Urdar project was a collaborative project between Uppsala University and the National Heritage Board, and funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. Congratulations to everyone involved!

The data from the Urdar project is an important part of the AGES resource of Swedigarch, which is now continuously updated with data from other organisations too. Read more about it on the AGES resource page, where you can download data from more than 3800 excavations.

The award was received by Kicki Martinelle, systems developer at the Department of Archaeology, Ancient History and Conservation at Uppsala University.
