Digital Archaeology

Digital Archaeology has emerged at the intersection of the humanities, natural sciences, and technology, and it has the capacity to influence the applied natural sciences by generating a better understanding of the origins, complexity, and transformations of human societies and their environments. Through the construction of an infrastructure for a new generation of data-intensive interdisciplinary research, Swedigarch will enhance Digital Archaeology and help accelerating research on long-term human-environment dynamics.

Swedigarch will achieve this by:

  • Federating existing archaeological database resources to facilitate advanced integrated analyses over multiple subjects and data types.
  • Creating transparent aggregation services to link data from archaeological excavations, laboratory and palaeoenvironmental analyses, and beyond.
  • Developing systems and frameworks for the continuous digitization and ingestion of all archaeological research data.
  • Exploring and planning for future analysis and data capture methods, ensuring the long-term sustainability and interoperability of all archaeological data.

Swedigarch builds on existing and developing Swedish data providers and technology, brought together to form an integrated infrastructure that supports research in digital archaeology. This infrastructure will enable new approaches to the use of digital methods, reinvent archaeological research agendas, and ensure that Swedish archaeology is a leading player in the data science revolution. Swedigarch will also massively increase the interdisciplinary and international interoperability of past, present, and future archaeological data.
