DESCRIPTION:The Lund University Open Science Days is being organised for a third consecutive year. The overarching theme for this year’s conference is Open Science: Trust and Integrity in Science. This encompasses how open science can foster a culture of transparency\, collaboration\, and accountability in scientific research. In an era where public trust in science is both crucial and contested\, this event brings together researchers\, PhD-students and other staff from Lund University and researching organisations in the local vicinity to explore how open science practices can strengthen the integrity and credibility of scientific knowledge. \nAs part of the session “Innovation and Open Science” on November 19\, 15:00–15:45\, Director Karl-Johan Lindholm will introduce Swedigarch and share his insights on the evolving e-infrastructure ecosystem and our path toward open science. \nThe Open Science Days are hosted by Lund University and primarily aimed at LU-affiliated researchers and PhD students. A limited number of seats are also available for external participants. \nFull program \nParticipation is free of charge\, and the event includes a vegetarian lunch and coffee. On November 19\, a poster mingle with drinks and snacks will provide an excellent opportunity for networking and exchange. \nRegistration closes on November 6.

SUMMARY:Webbinarium om arkeologisk dokumentation\, FoU-projektet Samlingar och Samband
DESCRIPTION:Varmt välkomna till ett webbinarium där vi presenterar de preliminära resultaten från RAÄ FoU-projektet Samlingar och Samband. Syftet med projektet är att ta fram förslag till teknisk specifikation för digital dokumentation från arkeologiska undersökningar så att dokumentationen blir FAIR. Inom projektet har vi nu tagit fram en skiss till detta och vill bjuda alla intresserade till en dialog kring för- och nackdelar med olika alternativ\, samt få input på våra förslag. \nEn del av arbetet är att definiera begrepp i en så kallad SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organisation System) vilket innebär spännande utmaningar ifråga om att etablera fungerande definitioner på termer och begrepp som används för att dokumentera arkeologiska undersökningar så att resultaten blir jämförbara. DESCRIPTION:3D Visualisation and FAIR Archaeological Practice: Perspectives from an AIR System’s Designer\, User\, and Mediator\nWarmly Welcome to our seventh inspirational lecture with Dr Paola Derudas\, DARKLab\, Lund University. The lecture will be delivered on Zoom: [https://uu-se.zoom.us/j/69250557548] \nNovember 5\, 4 pm – 5.30 pm (CET/UTC +1) \n \nAbstract \nAs 3D visualisation becomes increasingly central to archaeological documentation and interpretation\, ensuring that these digital resources are FAIR is crucial. Combining 3D technologies with FAIR principles supports not only transparent research but also enables meaningful reuse of data by a diverse range of users\, including scholars\, heritage professionals\, and community members. \nDuring the talk\, I will reflect on current needs and challenges in archaeological practice related to 3D visualisation and FAIR data principles\, drawing on the perspectives of multiple stakeholders: \n\npractitioners (archaeologists and specialists working with investigations)\,\npotential data users and re-users (including peers\, GLAM professionals\, and community members)\,\ninstitutions responsible for long-term data preservation and accessibility at both national and international levels.\n\nUsing the case of the Archaeological Interactive Report (AIR)\, a system designed to document and publish archaeological investigations online enriched with advanced 3D visualisation functionalities\, I will illustrate how Findability\, Accessibility\, Interoperability\, and Reusability can be practically addressed through the integration of interactive 3D visualisation with semantic structuring and publication workflows. Speaking from the combined perspectives of system designer\, user\, and mediator between archaeologists and developers\, I will explore the evolving role of such infrastructures in responding to diverse user needs. Finally\, I will consider future directions\, particularly in light of the growing impact of AI and large language models on both daily workflows and the broader discipline of archaeology. \nAbout Paola \nPaola Derudas is a researcher in archaeology at Lund University and a member of the Digital Archaeology Laboratory (DARKLab). She is also part of the EU-funded Transforming Data Reuse in Archaeology (TETRARCHs) project. She completed her PhD in Archaeology at Lund University in 2023\, specialising in the application of 3D digital technologies in archaeological practice. One of her notable achievements is the Archaeological Interactive Report (AIR)\, an online system for documenting and publishing archaeological investigations which is now used in many projects across Sweden\, Greece and Sardinia. She has participated in the activities of the Archaeological Excavation Modelling Working Group within the Ariadne Plus project. Backed by a strong international network and collaborations\, her research focuses on using web 3D visualisation and semantic technologies to improve archaeological practice. She has a particular interest in the reuse of 3D data\, FAIR-compliant data and infrastructures\, and participatory approaches to archaeology.

SUMMARY:Swedigarch Inspirational Lecture #5 with Dr. Sjoerd Kluiving\, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: TERRANOVA and a Multi- to Interdisciplinary Theory of the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Warmly Welcome to our fifth inspirational lecture with Dr Sjoerd Kluiving\, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The lecture will be delivered on Zoom [https://uu-se.zoom.us/j/67940613049] \nTERRANOVA: To inform the urgency of current and future landscape management\, and towards a Multi- to Interdisciplinary Theory of the Anthropocene – Review of overarching disciplines and research addressing planetary boundaries and social and humanitarian crises \n \nIn this presentation the results of TerraNova (A) will be presented\, discussing ow landscape management can contribute to the needed transition to a low carbon society. Second the lecture discusses the search for an Anthropocene theory (B) and what is needed in a wholistic sense in three broad transitions and what is needed for that. In conclusion the two parts will be combined in order to strive for a healthier future world in sustainability. \nA: The three main research objectives that contributed to the overall aim of the ITN TerraNova are: 1: Reconstruct the deep history of Europe’s cultural landscapes and corresponding changes in coupled human-nature interactions within subsequent human energy regimes and their transitions. 2: Rethink the outcomes of human environmental interactions over the past three energy regimes on the present-day landscape in Europe\, in order to inform future energy transitions from a long-term environmental and social perspective. 3: Design landscape management strategies\, i) provide scientific guidance on threats and opportunities for natural and cultural values of Europe’s landscapes\, ii) define criteria for assisted restoration of ecosystems of former (abandoned) agricultural areas\, and iii) to generate future scenarios for cultural landscape change\, with integrated landscape\, cultural heritage and biodiversity models\, to inform current planning initiatives\, e.g. for the transition to a low-carbon society. \nB: The Anthropocene is the time in which humanity has a greater influence and impact on our planet than all natural forces combined. The dominant influence of human forces on our planet’s land\, water and atmosphere has already overstepped biophysical planetary boundaries and is threatening to increase and worsen its conditions if politics\, society and economy are not adjusting their forces. The problem we face in the Anthropocene can be summarised in the most recent international reports and publications spanning from the IPCC\, IPBES\, UNESCO\, ENECE and United Nations. Three ‘broad and deep transitions’ needed to address this huge societal problem are the energy transition\, current use of space\, and the total greenhouse emissions of the food system. How can disciplines become overarching in breaking loose big societal problems of climate change\, biodiversity loss\, soil and water contamination\, social unrest\, pandemics and inequality? \nWe are discerning two different types of transformations: 1. The three ‘broad and deep transitions’\, and 2. A call for transformation that is supported by a multi- to inter- to transdisciplinary theory of the Anthropocene. The distinction between the two types of transformations is between practice and theory: Is the theoretical transformation (2) needed to support the practical transformation (1)? How can disciplines become overarching and supporting to each other? How can results of overarching and supporting disciplines contribute to potential solutions? \nThe current Anthropocene socio-ecological system is (or resembles) a runaway super-organism\, the question being to what extent it can still be tamed. The driving force of this super-organism seems to be a dysfunctional\, potentially self-destructive capitalist/extractivist\, infinite growth\, ideology of survival of the fittest. To what extent might this evolving super-organism still be capable of self-reflection and self-direction\, via (geopolitical) cultural evolution and self-domestication\, mindfully directed? Towards a multi- to inter- to transdisciplinary Anthropocene theory is a call for transformation that needs incremental steps and which needs to be acknowledged by all academic\, governmental\, corporal and societal actors.

DESCRIPTION:Swedigarch\, Riksantikvarieämbetet & Statens Historiska Museer bjuder in till en konferens om öppen arkeologi. Konferensen riktar sig till alla intressenter och verksamma inom svensk arkeologi och kulturmiljövård\, såsom uppdragsarkeologer\, forskare\, studenter\, myndighetsutövare\, museiverksamma\, kulturmiljöhandläggare\, specialister m fl. \nÖvergången till digital dokumentation inom uppdragsarkeologin har sedan början av 1990-talet genererat stora mängder digital primärdata. Öppen vetenskap är ett ramverk av principer och ansatser för att skapa en global och jämlik tillgång till vetenskapliga resultat och forskningsprocesser med syfte att påskynda implementeringen av de globala målen för hållbar utveckling. Principerna om öppen vetenskap innebär ett paradigmskifte då fler delar av forskningsprocessen blir öppna för alla att använda och ta del av\, både inom och utanför forskarsamhället. SUMMARY:Workshop: Making archaeological geodata open and FAIR
DESCRIPTION:Swedigarch Module 3 focuses on working with geodata and documentation derived from archaeological excavations. The primary objective is to enhance the FAIR (Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reusable) status of existing GIS data. As a first step towards this\, we have developed export functions to enable efficient handling of Intrasis data in QGIS. \nDuring the workshop\, we will showcase some of the tools and data developed thus far\, including the Swedigarch Geotools plugin for QGIS and the AGES server for accessing data from excavations. A first version of the server is scheduled to be launched in November to make data available as individual databases for each excavation. This includes data from the archaeological unit at the National Heritage Board (RAÄ UV) with more than 3\,500 databases\, and more will be added from other organizations. Later\, a version of this will be harmonized into a layer that can be used for aggregated analysis and for linking to other resources. Moreover\, we wish to engage in discussions about the potential and challenges associated with this ongoing development\, and how archaeologists can deal with geodata from excavations in the future to ensure the information is FAIR. \nThe workshop will be held on Zoom on November 20\, from 14:15 to 16:00 CET. [https://uu-se.zoom.us/j/65644859480] \n  \nThe Data Interface\nAbstract: The construction of knowledge is understood to be social and combinatorial – our knowledge is built on the knowledge of others\, our knowledge is created from the data collected by ourselves and others\, our data becomes the basis for the creation of new data by ourselves and others\, and so on. But what about the devices which mediate in that process? We pay a great deal of attention to the processes behind data collection\, data recording\, data archiving\, and are concerned about ensuring its findability\, accessibility\, interoperability\, and reusability into the future so that it can provide the basis for the construction of new knowledge\, but we often seem to pay less attention to the technological mediation between ourselves and those same data. Given that our increasing access to growing bodies of archaeological digital data has been truly transformative over recent years\, how do the search interfaces which we customarily employ in our archaeological data portals influence our use of them\, and consequently affect the knowledge we create through them? How do they both enable and constrain us? And what are the implications for future interface designs?

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to a Swedigarch Inspirational Lecture #3 online Q&A session with Marcy Rockman on April 10\, 2024\, 4–5 pm (Swedish time) at https://gu-se.zoom.us/j/61082535216. \nMarcy Rockman’s Swedigarch Inspirational Lecture #3 The Radical Importance of Now in Linking Archaeology and Climate Change was originally planned for December 6\, 2023\, but had to be cancelled owing to technical problems. The lecture has been recorded and can be found here. The Q&A session provides an opportunity to further discuss the potentials and pitfalls of how archaeology can contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation. \nAbout the lecture\nArchaeology has long understood itself to be fundamentally about material remains of the past and that the responsibility of archaeologists and heritage managers is foremost to steward objects\, places\, and data for the future. But over nearly 15 years of working with cultural heritage and climate change policy at US national and international levels\, the power of archaeology that Marcy Rockman is seeing most clearly is its capacity to connect us with the present and allow us to see ourselves and relationships in new ways. In this talk she shares experiences and insights with the framing of research questions\, finding and sharing of stories\, and emphasizes how needed the skills and perspectives of archaeologists are in building sustainable responses to climate change. \nMarcy Rockman is an archaeologist with experience in national and international climate change policy. Her research focus is landscape learning\, which explores how humans gather\, remember\, and share environmental information. She has used this to address situations as diverse as cultural resource management in the American West and homeland security risk communication in Washington\, DC. In 2011–2018 Marcy served with the US National Park Service as the inaugural Climate Change Adaptation Coordinator for Cultural Resources. More recently\, she has held multiple international and US national roles in the field of overlap between cultural heritage management and climate science and policy\, for instance working with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and coordinating climate change hearings and briefings with the US Congress. Currently\, Marcy is Director of Lifting Rocks – Climate and Heritage Consulting (www.liftingrocks.org) and Associate Research Professor with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland\, College Park. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona. \nNew research article \nMarcy’s new research article about climate change\, heritage\, and policy\, with a case study of the US federal government was published in PNAS on March 25\, 2024: Capacity of the U.S. federal system for cultural heritage to meet challenges of climate change. \n

SUMMARY:Tom Dawson (University of St Andrews): Scotland’s Changing Coastline
DESCRIPTION:Swedigarch Inspirational Lecture #2 \nZoom: https://gu-se.zoom.us/j/66934904149 \nScotland’s dynamic coastline is subject to ferocious Atlantic storms that can cause tens of metres of erosion during single events. Although there is uncertainty about how climate change may affect future storminess\, there is no doubt that heritage sites will continue to be impacted. However\, there is no single organisation that is responsible for building defences or undertaking work in advance of damage\, and so new ways of working with the threatened heritage have been developed. Key to this has been a staged approach that sees surveys followed by analysis\, which in itself leads to the identification of priority sites and the development of projects to rescue information before it is too late. Many of these projects have taken a creative approach\, with local community members working alongside heritage professionals. This talk will detail the methodology used in Scotland and will give examples of a range of projects\, from excavation to site relocation; film making to 3D recording. \nTom Dawson is an archaeologist and Principal Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews. For the past twenty years\, Tom has been leading a research team recording the effects of coastal change on archaeological and other heritage sites in Scotland. He has also served as a Commissioner of the organisation that holds the National Monuments Record and was Vice President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. \n
